‘Nebraska Today’ Features Grasshopper Health's Journey From Research to Real-World Care

A look at how a University of Nebraska collaboration became a startup working to make gait a routine, reimbursable part of how disease is caught early.

Nebraska Today, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's news publication, recently featured Grasshopper Health in a story tracing our path from a research idea to a company advancing toward clinical trials. It's a great look at where we came from, told through the people who built it. 

The story starts with a simple but powerful observation: gait, often called the “sixth vital sign,” can reveal signs of disease long before a formal diagnosis. Our co-founder and technology adviser, Fadi Alsaleem, PhD, explains how a University of Nebraska Collaboration Initiative grant, two decades of peripheral artery disease data, and a chance to apply machine learning to that data turned into the idea behind our wearable, the Axis Patch*, and how that idea grew from targeting one disease to potentially informing at least 18.

It also digs into why devices like this haven't taken off before, what it's taken to design something patients will actually want to wear, and how a research collaboration across three University of Nebraska campuses turned into a real company with real momentum, including our recent investment and partnership with CQuence Health.
